Meldreth

MELDRETH This was once serious fruit-growing country, but Meldreth now has only one commercial orchard left with a farm shop attached. It has a recreation ground, and beneath a spreading chestnut tree are the old village stocks and a whipping post. It is an enormously welcoming village, though it is rather scattered. The primary school is well regarded, as is the Melbourn College for 11–16-year-olds nearby. Leisure opportunities include tennis, croquet, and football. Village people may also use the riding stables attached to the Meldreth Manor School, which is run by Scope. The village contains a mix of old thatched cottages and new developments, though much of the newer housing seems very uniform. Semis sell for around £170,000; four-bedroom detached houses for £399,000.

Melbourn is across the fields. Its attractions include several restaurants and pubs and a very strong community spirit. Property prices are similar to those in Meldreth.
