HARLOW TOWN It has to be said that many people hate Harlow in spite of its parks and Henry Moore sculptures. The New Town was created in 1947, to the masterplan of Sir Frederick Gibberd, as a series of four large residential zones in a rural setting, each with its own infrastructure. The population jumped from 4,000 to over 80,000, mostly as a result of London overspill. A two-bedroom terraced house at Church Langley will cost over £180,000 and a five-bedroom detached £475,000. Harlow has two good shopping complexes, Broad Walk and the newly-opened Harvey Shopping Centre, a nightclub, bingo hall and the Playhouse theatre. A new leisure centre is due to open in late 2009, featuring two swimming pools, badminton and tennis courts and a gym, as well as a Science Alive hands-on learning centre.
