Amberley

AMBERLEY is another of the many villages in this area that have hung on to their character, with flint-and-thatch cottages and old-fashioned cottage gardens. Amberley Castle, once the residence of the Bishops of Chichester and dismantled by Parliamentarians during the Civil War, is now a romantic country house hotel. A footpath to one side leads to Amberley Wild Brooks, protected water meadows visited by migrating birds. There is a shop-cum-post-office, a handful of pubs and an open-air Amberley Working Museum with resident craftspeople. The village is protected from heavy traffic on a side road off the B2139. A two-bedroom thatched cottage with an inglenook fireplace could be priced at £400,000; a larger chocolate box cottage at £500,000 to £600,000. House prices remain on the steep side in several other popular villages further from the station, such as Houghton and Bury.
