Whitchurch

WHITCHURCH is an old silk mill town on the River Test. The mill on Frog Island is now restored and sells extremely expensive bespoke silk lengths. But Whitchurch, too, has grown fleshy with huge council estates and private developments designed for those who made money in the Eighties. At Lynch Hill Park, for instance, large mock-Tudor and mock-Georgian houses are selling in the £300,000 to £350,000 bracket. At the lower end of the market, two-bedroom terraced houses cost around £170,000. To the west of the town, newly-built four-bedroom houses fetch around £350,000. On the doorstep is the wonderful rolling chalk downland that envelops the River Test, the landscape used by Richard Adams in Watership Down. An 18th-century brick-and-flint farmhouse in this area would start at £550,000.
