NORWICH This has become popular with a new breed of part-time commuter, for the more frequent service to London makes the journey easier. The attractions of Norwich are strong, especially with the Broads and the Norfolk beaches just a car drive away. The hospital and the University of East Anglia swell the ranks of middle-class professionals. The city retains a strong sense of history with the old castle, huge tented market and vibrant shopping centre at its heart, where street buskers, students and wealthy shoppers mix. The Riverside area around the railway station and Carrow Road football ground (home turf for Delia Smith) has been transformed into a lively modern shopping and leisure complex, with a cinema, bars and restaurants, swimming pool and bowling. House of Fraser can be found in the recently opened Chapelfield Centre on the former NestlĂ© site. A farmers’ market is held once a month on the Norfolk Showground. To be near enough to the station you need to look to the south-west, in an area known as The Golden Triangle, where you could pay £285,000 for a Victorian, three-bedroom detached house. On a modern estate you could buy a detached four-bedroom house for £270,000.

Good for: those who want busy city life, good schools, and the wild North Norfolk coast within an hour’s drive.
