Paddock Wood

PADDOCK WOOD Londoners have always been attracted to Paddock Wood. Those with happy memories of hop-picking settled here after the Second World War. More recently there has been a steady trickle of suburban refugees from Bromley and Orpington. Paddock Wood now is the centre for the distribution of fruit and vegetables between this area and Europe. It is large enough to support a department store, a Waitrose, a sports and leisure centre and some light industry. Its comprehensive school has a good reputation and doubles as an adult education centre. Three-bedroom semis cost between £200,000 and £245,000. Four-bedroom detached houses cost £250,000 to £425,000. It would be misleading to describe all the property here as cheap, however. The convenience of the journey into London means that a large detached house with extensive gardens can fetch £800,000 upwards.
