Gillingham

GILLINGHAM is the largest of the Medway towns and commercial big brother to Chatham, with which it shares the former naval dockyards and depot. The large shopping centre has a pedestrianised High Street with the usual chain stores. There are very good leisure facilities, including an ice rink, leisure centre, leisure pool, indoor bowls and cricket. Gillingham Football Club is currently playing in the second division of the Football League. The dockyard here is ringed by an old Georgian fortification system called the Brompton Lines, one-and-a-half-miles of moats and ramparts overlooked by the Napoleonic Fort Amherst.

Near the town centre, in the tightly-packed Victorian streets, first-time buyers can still pick up small terraced houses for around £110,000 to £120,000. One of the better areas is Darland, a Thirties’ estate where four-bedroom detached houses sell for upwards of £220,000.
