St Margaret's
ST MARGARET’S The village here is Stanstead St Margaret’s, divided from Stanstead Abbots by the River Lea, though sharing a vicar. A bypass has reduced the amount of through-traffic from 19,000 vehicles a day to 9,000. It is a fast-growing village with new houses going up all the time. There is one pub remaining, The Jolly Fisherman. The old malt industry lingers like a ghost. Disused cowls and chutes litter the skyline, and the occasional whiff of it wafts over the terraced cottages and modern estates in Stanstead Abbots. There are some small shops and a post office on this side of the river, with playing fields and sports club just outside at St Margaretsbury. Stanstead Abbots has a voluntary-aided primary school attached to the church. Most of the older children attend secondary schools in Hertford or North Hoddesdon. The Stansteads have a marina with narrowboats and cruisers for hire. Property prices are slightly higher than those in Hoddesdon.
