Beaconsfield

BEACONSFIELD has a dual personality and a dual population. The old town grew at the crossroads of the coaching routes to Windsor and Oxford and is centred on a broad square and a pleasant green. Local people house-hunt in the Old Town for 17th- and 18th-century cottages, priced at £345,000 for a three-bedroom terraced home. Commuters prefer the convenience of the new town that has developed near the station since the 1920s. The average cost of a four-bedroom detached house is £645,000. Typical buyers include professionals and growing families, and young City strivers who move on up the scale to houses costing £2m to £4m. A good prep school and state schools with high reputations add to the attractions, but what used to be a strong community spirit is struggling to stay alive. It revives most energetically on 10 May for the annual fair. The Old Town has a posh furniture store, two jewellers and the Loch Fyne fish restaurant and there is a very popular Tuesday market and monthly farmers’ market.
