Welham Green

WELHAM GREEN is a step down from Brookmans Park but still within the halo cast by the M25 as well as being close to shops and schools of St Albans. The village offers a mix of private developments and council estates built around a centre with a green, shops, pubs, restaurants and a garage. A three-bedroom detached house could be bought for £350,000 – possibly 30 per cent cheaper than an equivalent house in Brookmans Park.

Local knowledge: There is a commemorative stone to the Italian balloonist Vincenzo Lunardi, who made the first balloon ascent outside France in 1784. He landed here to let his cat out of the basket because it was feeling sick.
