Holmwood

HOLMWOOD Note that after Dorking the rail service is not as good – the last train leaves Waterloo at 7.20pm (though there is one more at 11.26pm). Some villages have been badly affected by the A24 cutting south. Beare Green straddles it, and now consists mainly of houses built during the Seventies and Eighties. These sell for less than those in Dorking, of which it is effectively a dormitory. A modern three-bedroom house would start at £300,000. In the older part of Beare Green, around the village pond, a four-bedroom house with a large garden could cost £1.5m. The Holmwoods (North and South) are also staked out along the A24. North Holmwood retains its green and pond, but has been submerged by new housing. The surrounding countryside is lovely, with 600 acres of common for pony treks and long walks.

Good for: glorious countryside but very accessible.
Local knowledge: just to the north is a memorial to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, a member of the American millionaire family, who sacrificed himself by handing his lifejacket to a woman passenger when the Lusitania sank in 1915.
